The redevelopment project of the former mining site in Ollomont (AO), carried out in collaboration with the Department of Architecture and Design of the Politecnico di Torino, has been published in the latest issue of ArchAlp – the international journal of Alpine architecture and landscape, published by the IAM Research Centre – Institute of Mountain Architecture.

The project represents an important recognition for an intervention that combines historical memory, environmental sustainability, and the language of contemporary architecture.

The former mining complex, once a place of extraction and labour, has now been reborn as a museum and educational centre, with spaces dedicated to scientific outreach, an archaeometallurgy laboratory, the “Copper Trail,” and historic mining galleries that have been secured and opened to the public.

The intervention prioritised lightweight, reversible solutions fully integrated into the surrounding landscape, drawing inspiration from the original industrial architecture. The new building—featuring a large panoramic glass façade, a metal skin marked by cuts of light, adjustable brise-soleil, and an internal courtyard that echoes the entrance to the Sant’Anna gallery—was designed to be functional, flexible, and strongly distinctive.

A project that transforms a productive site into a place of culture and knowledge, giving the territory a new landmark capable of generating value also from an educational and tourism perspective.

The project is described in detail in ArchAlp issue no. 13, titled “Cultural Infrastructures in the Alps. Design between pedagogy and local development,” available free of charge in PDF format or for purchase in print at the following link: https://archalp.it.
