Sertec Engineering Consulting has developed the project for the construction of the Rio Levesa overflow channel in the Gallenca torrent to safeguard against flooding in the towns of Valperga, Salassa, Oglianico and Rivarolo.

The objective of the project was to reduce the hydraulic risk associated with flooding phenomena that occur in conjunction with intense rainfall events, through the adaptation of the urban stretch of the Rio Levesa. The project involved the construction of a spillway that would bring most of the flow into the Gallenca stream downstream of the access bridge to the Ottini hamlet without entering the town centre.

The route created took into account the existing infrastructure, the altitude of the area, the municipal planning and the cost-effectiveness of the work.

The construction of the drainage channel was evaluated as a technically advantageous alternative also from an economic point of view compared to the numerous hydraulic works to adapt the stream.

The intervention involved the adaptation of the manhole cover with a constant section and slope in the urban section. The route was diverted onto public roads allowing for simpler construction work and faster maintenance of the work.

The new manhole was created with prefabricated concrete box boxes cast on site.

Upstream of the manhole cover, a storage basin was created equipped with a comb-shaped dam acting as a log buffer, to prevent floating material from entering the covered section.

For the stretch of watercourse downstream from the manhole, the reprofiling and cleaning of the riverbed was envisaged, the protection of the banks with cliffs made of boulders re-greened with cuttings and the armored bottom with boulders at the exit of the manhole.
