Sertec Engineering Consulting developed the project for the redevelopment of the Casa del Balilla building, transforming the existing intended use into a residential healthcare facility.
The Casa del Balilla is a historic city building, built in 1933 to be the headquarters of the local Opera Nazionale Balilla and located less than 500 meters from the central Piazza San Magno, in a position overlooking the Bernocchi-dell’Acqua gardens.
The project includes the architectural and functional recovery of the building, safeguarding its material and compositional characteristics and reorganizing its internal spatial layout, as well as a program relating to energy efficiency.
The structural works, to be foreseen for the Casa del Balilla building, were designed after a safety assessment and by identifying any structural deficiencies on the load-bearing elements in order to design interventions aimed at improving the seismic performance of the structure.
The following interventions have been planned:
♦consolidation of the existing floors;
♦local reinforcement interventions for any openings of load-bearing masonry spaces (steel portals);
♦consolidation of load-bearing walls by applying fibre-reinforced plaster. This intervention, planned in correspondence with the masonry piers, has the function of increasing the mechanical properties of the masonry piers being intervened, ensuring better resistance of the load-bearing structural elements to static and seismic actions.
