G.A.I.A. S.p.A. has appointed Sertec Engineering Consulting for the development of the project for the expansion of the Cerro Tanaro non-hazardous waste landfill.
The planned works make it possible to increase the storage capacity of the plant, compared to what was authorised, by approximately 1,215,000 m3.
The design solutions were conceived to satisfy fundamental criteria of effectiveness, cost-effectiveness, environmental sustainability and social acceptability. In particular, different design alternatives were analyzed and evaluated in order to:
♦ maximize the volume of storable waste while minimizing the surface area of land occupied by the planned tanks and the systems serving the landfill
♦ minimize the cost of the intervention, integrating the newly built works with the equipment and ancillary services already in the possession of the proponent and still fully functional
♦ reduce the impact on the environment, occupying areas already characterized by the same intended use and encouraging the ongoing implementation of environmental recovery works, before the closure of the landfill
♦ optimize the exploitation of an area characterized by adequate socio-environmental requirements foreseen for waste disposal plants, such as for example the high protection guaranteed by low permeability deposits towards groundwater and the reduced interference with human settlements
♦ guarantee the operational continuity of the landfill and, at the same time, the continuity of service for the disposal of waste from the Asti area and unused waste products from the GAIA company’s plants
♦ provide, given the lack of final disposal plants, a service to other public and private entities in line with environmental legislation.
