VALPERGA – TURIN: REALIZATION OF A SPILLWAY CANAL OF LEVESA RIO

Sertec Engineering Consulting developed the project for the construction of a spillway canal of Levesa Rio into Gallenca stream to safeguard against flooding in the towns of Valperga, Salassa, Oglianico and Rivarolo.
The purpose of the project was to reduce the hydraulic risk related to flooding phenomena that occur during intense rainfall events, through the adaptation of the urban section of Levesa Rio. The project included the construction of a spillway canal that would carry most of the flow into the Gallenca stream downstream of the access bridge to the Ottini hamlet without entering the built-up area.
The route constructed took into account the existing infra¬structures, the elevation of the area, the municipal planning and the economy of the work.
The realization of the spillway canal was been evaluated as a technically advantageous alternative also from an economic point of view compared to many hydraulic works for the adaptation of the stream.
The intervention included the manhole adaptation with a constant section and slope in the urban section. The route was been diverted to public roads allowing an easier construction work and a faster maintenance of the work.
The new manhole was been made of prefabricated and cast-in-place concrete box culverts.
Upstream of the manhole cover, a storage basin equipped with a comb bridle with the function of a para¬trance was made to prevent floating material from entering the covered section.
For the stretch of watercourse downstream of the manhole, the company planned the reprofiling and cleaning of the riverbed, the protection of the banks with boulder cliffs greened with cuttings, and the bottom armored with boulders at the outlet of the manhole.
